Taupo ['to? p ?:] ); also spelled Taup? ) is a town on the shore of Lake Taupo, which occupies the caldera of Taupo Volcano in the middle of New Zealand's North Island. It is the center of the Taupo District Council and is located in the southern Waikato Region.
Taupo has a population of 24,500 (June 2017). In 1953, Taupo was officially formed as a small area, but since 1989 it has been managed by the Taupo District Council, districts including Taupo itself and the surrounding hinterland. It is, however, sometimes referred to as the city. It is the 20th largest urban area in New Zealand, and the second largest in the Waikato Region (behind Hamilton).
The name Taupo , known to the city, is a shortened version of its full name, Taup? -nui-a-Tia . Literally translated from the M language? Ori, Taup? -nui-a-Tia means "The great cloak of Tia", where Tia is the name of the founder of the lake.

Geography
Taupo is located at the outlet of Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake, in the northeast part of the lake where it is dumped into the Waikato River. The climate of Taupo is cool and windy when compared to other parts of the North Island. This is due to the city located in the interior, which results in the accumulation of dry air which causes freezing weather during the winter. But the snow in Taupo is rare. The summer climate in Taupo is light with a maximum average temperature of 23 degrees and an average temperature of at least 10 degrees.
