The RMS Queen Mary is a retired British ship that sailed mainly in the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 for the Cunard Line - known as the Cunard-White Star Line when the ship entered service. Built by John Brown & amp; The company in Clydebank, Scotland, Queen Mary , along with RMSÃ, Queen Elizabeth , was built as part of the two-week Cunard weekly express service planned between Southampton, Cherbourg and New York. The two ships were the British response to an express super-liner built by German, Italian and French companies in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Queen Mary was the flagship of Cunard Line from May 1936 to October 1946 when she was replaced in that role by Queen Elizabeth .

Queen Mary sailed on her maiden voyage on May 27, 1936 and arrested Blue Riband in August of that year; he lost the title for SSÃ, Normandie in 1937 and regained it back in 1938, holding him until 1952 when he was beaten by the new SS United States . With the outbreak of the Second World War, he was transformed into troops and transported Allied troops during the war.

After the war, Queen Mary was reinstalled for passenger service and along with Queen Elizabeth started the transatlantic transatlantic passenger service of two vessels where two ships were originally built. Both vessels dominated the transatlantic passenger transport market until the beginning of the jet era in the late 1950s. By the mid-1960s, Queen Mary was old and, although still among the most popular transatlantic liners, operated at a loss.

After several years of declining profits for the Cunard Line, Queen Mary officially retired from service in 1967. She left Southampton for the last time on October 31, 1967 and sailed to the port of Long Beach, California, United. Country, where he remains permanently tethered. Most machines, including one of two engine rooms, three of four propellers, and all boilers, are removed. The ship serves as a tourist attraction featuring restaurants, museums and hotels. The vessel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has received the Queen Mary as part of Historic Hotels of America.

Construction and naming

With Germany launching Bremen and Europa into service, the UK did not want to miss the shipbuilding race. The White Star Line started building their 80,000 tonnes of Oceanic in 1928, while Cunard planned their own nameless ship of 75,000 tonnes.

Construction on the ship, later known only as "Number Hull 534", began in December 1930 on the Clyde River by John Brown & amp; Shipyard company at Clydebank in Scotland. The work was discontinued in December 1931 because the Great Depression and Cunard applied to the British Government for loans to complete 534. This loan was granted, with enough money to complete the unfinished ship, and also to build a prospective friend, with a view to providing weekly service to New York with just two ships.

One of the terms of the loan is that Cunard will join the White Star Line, which is Cunard's main rival in the UK at the time and who has been forced by depression to cancel development of Oceanic. Both lines were approved and the merger was completed on May 10, 1934. Work on Queen Mary immediately resumed and it was launched on September 26, 1934. The final solution took 3 1 / 2 year and cost 3.5 million pounds sterling. Most of the ship's interiors are designed and built by the Bromsgrove Guild.

The ship was named after Queen Mary, Empress King George V. Until its launch, her name will be given kept secret guarded. Legend has it that Cunard intended to name the vessel Victoria, in accordance with the company's tradition of giving the names of his ships ending with "he", but when the company's representatives asked the king's permission to name the ocean liner after England "The greatest queen ", he said his wife, Queen Mary, would be pleased. Thus, according to legend, delegates of course have no choice but to report that Number 534 will be called Queen Mary .

The story was rejected by company officials, and traditionally the names of the rulers were only used for the Royal Navy's vessel capital. Some support for this story is provided by Washington Post editor Felix Morley, who sailed as a guest of Cunard Line at Queen Mary 1936 on her first voyage. In his 1979 autobiography, , Morley wrote that he was placed on the table with Sir Percy Bates, the head of the Cunard Line. Bates tells the ship's naming story "on condition that you will not print it for the rest of my life." The name Queen Mary can also be decided as a compromise between Cunard and the White Star Line, as both lines have a tradition of using a good name ending "ic" with White Star and "he" with Cunard.

The name was already given to the Clyde TSÃ © turbine steamship vessel, Queen Mary , so Cunard made a deal with the owner and the older ship was renamed Queen Mary II .

Queen Mary is equipped with 24 Yarrow boilers in four boiler rooms and four Parsons turbines in two engine rooms. The boiler sends 400 pounds per square inch (28 bar) of steam at 700 ° F (371 ° C) which provides a maximum of 212,000 shp (158,000 kW) to four propellers, each spinning at 200 RPM. Queen Mary reached 32.84 knots in his acceptance experiment in early 1936.

History (1934-1939)

In 1934, the new liner was launched by Queen Mary as RMS Queen Mary . On the way down the runway, Queen Mary is slowed by eighteen drag chains, which check liner progress to the Clyde River, part of which has been widened to accommodate the launch.

When he sailed on his maiden voyage from Southampton on May 27, 1936, he was commanded by Sir Edgar T. Britten, who had been the chief lord for Cunard White Star when the ship was being built at the John Brown shipyard. Queen Mary measures 80,774 gross tons registers (GRT). Its rival Normandie, originally raked in 79,280 tons, had modified the previous winter to increase its size to 83,243 GRT (enclosed recreation room built on the deck of the rear boat in the area where the court of the game was), and therefore reclaimed the title the world's largest marine vessel of Queen Mary , which only held it for several weeks. Queen Mary sailed at great speed for most of her maiden voyage to New York, until a thick fog forced a speed reduction on the last day of the crossing, arriving in New York Harbor on June 1.

Queen Mary 's design was criticized for being too traditional, especially when Normandie revolutionary hull with clipper-shaped, lean bow. Except for the burial, he appears to be a larger version of his predecessors Cunard of the Pre-First World War era. Its interior design, while most of Art Deco, looks restrained and conservative when compared to modern French ships. Queen Mary proved to be a more popular ship than its bigger rival, in terms of passengers being taken.

In August 1936, Queen Mary captured Blue Riband from Normandie with an average speed of 30.14 knots (55.82 km/h; 34.68 mph) to west direction and 30.63 knots (56.73 knots). Ã, km/h; 35.25 mph) eastward direction. Normandie was replaced with a new propeller in 1937 and reclaimed its honor, but in 1938 Queen Mary reclaimed the Blue Riband in both directions at an average speed of 30.99 knots (57.39 km/h, 35.66 mph) westbound and 31.69 knots (58.69 km/h; 36.47 mph) eastward, the record that stands up lost to United States in 1952.

Interior

Among the facilities available on board the Queen Mary, this liner features two indoor pools, a beauty salon, a library and a children's nursery for all three classes, a music studio and a lecture hall, alone in the world, outdoor tennis courts and dog kennels. The largest room onboard is the main dining room of the main class (main class) (grand salon), which includes three high levels and anchored by a wide column. Cabin-grade swimming pool facilities extend over two decks. This was the first ocean liner equipped with his Jewish prayer room - part of a policy to show that the British shipping lanes avoided the apparent racism of the time in Nazi Germany.

The main cabin-class dining room features a large map of transatlantic junctions, with twin tracks symbolizing winter/spring routes (further south to avoid the iceberg) and summer/fall routes. During each intersection, the motor model Queen Mary will show the progress of the vessel on the way.

As an alternative to the main dining room, Queen Mary features a separate Verandah Grill cabin class at Sun Deck on the top of the boat. Verandah Grill is an exclusive ÃÆ' la carte restaurant with a capacity of about eighty passengers, and converted to Starlight Club at night. Also on board is the Observation Bar, Art Deco-style lounge with spacious sea views.

Woods from different parts of the United Kingdom is used in public spaces and its staterooms. The accommodation ranges from a complete cabin and luxury (first) cabin class to a modest and cramped third class cabin. Artists were commissioned by Cunard in 1933 for artwork in the interior including Edward Wadsworth and A. Duncan Carse.

Second World War

At the end of August 1939, Queen Mary was on her way back from New York to Southampton. The international situation caused him to be escorted by the HMSÃ © battlecruiser, Hood . He arrived safely, and left for New York on September 1st. By the time he arrived, the Second World War had begun and he was ordered to remain in the harbor with Normandie until further notice.

In March 1940 Queen Mary and Normandie were joined in New York by Queen Elizabeth new sister ship Queen Elizabeth , fresh from his secret dashboard from Clydebank. The three largest liners in the world sat idle for some time until the Allied commander decided that the three ships could be used as troops. Normandie was destroyed by fire during the conversion of his troops. Queen Mary left New York to Sydney, Australia, where he, along with several other coatings, was converted into troops to bring Australian and New Zealand troops to England.

In World War II conversion, the ship's hull, superstructure and mouthpiece were painted gray. As a result of his new color, and in combination with his extraordinary speed, he is known as the "Gray Ghost." To protect against magnetic mines, degaussing coils are installed on the outside of the hull. Inside, the furniture and cabin decor were removed and replaced with a three-ply wooden bed, which was later replaced with a standing bed.

Six miles of carpet, 220 cases of porcelain, crystal and silver services, tapestries and paintings have been removed and stored in warehouses during the war. The wood in the staterooms, the cabin class dining room and other public areas are covered with leather. Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth are the largest and fastest troops involved in the war, often carrying as many as 15,000 people on a single journey, and often traveling out of the convoy and without bodyguards. Their high speed courses and zigzags make it almost impossible for U Boats to catch them.

On October 2, 1942, Queen Mary accidentally drowned one of her escorts, cutting through a lightweight cruiser HMSÃ, Curacoa off the coast of Ireland with the loss of 239 lives. Queen Mary brought thousands of Americans from the 29th Infantry Division to join the Allied forces in Europe. Because of the risk of U-boat attack, Queen Mary is under orders not to stop under any circumstances and steamed forward with cracked stems. Some sources claim that hours later, the convoy's main escort returned to rescue 99 survivors of Curacoa's crew 338, including his captain John W. Boutwood. This claim contradicts Liner then Captain's Staff (and later Cunard Commodore) Harry Grattidge, who notes that Queen Mary Captain immediately orders the accompanying destroyer to search for survivors. in the moment of sinking Curacoa .

On July 25-30, 1943, the Queen Mary brought 15,740 troops and 943 crew (16,683 total), a record that stood for most of the passengers ever transported on a single ship. During this trip, while 700 miles (1.1 miles) from Scotland during a storm, he was suddenly hit by a leaflet by a rogue wave that may have reached a height of 28 meters (92 feet). A report on these crossings can be found in Carter's book. As quoted in the book, Carter's father, Dr. Norval Carter, part of the 110th Station Hospital on the board at the time, wrote in a letter that at one point Queen Mary "was cursed upside down... At one time the upper deck was at its usual height and then , swoom! Down, up, and forward he will walk. "It is expected that the ship will roll 52 degrees, and it will be reversed if he rolls 3 more degrees. This incident inspired Paul Gallico to write his novel, The Poseidon Adventure (1969) and brought the incident to extreme fiction. It was adapted as a 1972 film of the same name, in which SS Poseidon was turned upside down, and the trapped passenger tried to escape. Of course, part of the film was taken in the actual Queen Mary place, conveniently docked in Long Beach.

During the Queen Mary war brought British Prime Minister Winston Churchill across the Atlantic to a meeting with fellow Allied forces officials on several occasions. He is listed on the passenger manifest as "Colonel Warden". The ship was also used to return American troops from Europe after the war.

Post Second World War

After sending many war brides to Canada, Queen Mary made it the fastest crossing, returning to Southampton in just three days, 22 hours and 42 minutes with an average speed of just under 32 knots (59 km)/h ). From September 1946 to July 1947, Queen Mary was reinstalled for passenger service, adding air conditioning and upgrading her bedding configuration to the first 711 classes (formerly called cabin class), 707 cabin classes (formerly tourist class) and 577 passenger of the tourist class (formerly third year). After the repairs, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth dominated the transatlantic passenger trade as an express service of two weekly Cunard White Star vessels through the second half of the 1940s and also entered the 1950s. They proved very profitable for Cunard (as the company changed its name in 1947).

On January 1, 1949, Queen Mary foundered in Cherbourg, France. He stalled back the next day and returned to service.

In 1958 the first transatlantic flight by jet started a truly new era of competition for Queens Cunard. On some trips, winters specifically, Queen Mary sailed to the harbor with more crew than passengers, although she and Queen Elizabeth still averaged over 1,000 passengers per cross into the middle of the 1960s. In 1965, the entire Cunard fleet operated at a loss.

Hoping to continue to finance Queen Elizabeth 2 being built at Brown's shipyard, Cunard mortgaged the majority of the fleet. Due to a combination of age, lack of public interest, inefficiencies in new markets and damage after the effects of a national seafarer strike, Cunard announced that both Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth would retire from services and be sold. Many offers were filed, and a $ 3.45 million/Ã, £ 1.2 million offer from Long Beach, California outshines Japanese merchants. Queen Mary is featured in the 1966 Assault on a Queen action-adventure film starring Frank Sinatra.

Queen Mary had retired from service in 1967. On September 27, she completed her 1,000th and final race in the North Atlantic, carrying 2,112,000 passengers over 3,792,227 miles (6,102,998 km ). Under the command of Captain John Treasure Jones, who has been a captain since 1965, he sailed from Southampton for the last time on 31 October with 1,093 passengers and 806 crew. After traveling around Cape Horn, he arrived in Long Beach on December 9th. Queen Elizabeth was withdrawn in 1968 and Queen Elizabeth 2 took over the transatlantic route in 1969.

Long Beach

Queen Mary is permanently moored as a tourist attraction, hotel, museum and event facility in Long Beach. From 1983 to 1993, the Howard Hughes Spruce Goose plane was located in a large dome nearby. The dome was later transformed as a sound stage for film and television. This structure is now used by Carnival Cruise Lines as a ship terminal, as a venue for the Long Beach Derby Gals roller derby team and as a venue.

Since drilling has begun for oil in Long Beach Harbor, a portion of revenue has been set aside in the "Tidelands Oil Fund." Part of this money was allocated in 1958 for the future purchase of a maritime museum for Long Beach.

Conversions

When Queen Mary was bought by Long Beach, the new owners decided not to preserve it as a marine vessel. It was decided to clean up almost every area of the ship under the "C" deck (called the "R" deck after 1950, to reduce the confusion of passengers, as it rests on the "R" deck) to make way for Jacques Cousteau's new lifestyle. Museum of the Sea. This adds the museum space to 400,000 square feet (37,000 m 2 ).

Required removal of all boiler rooms, front engine room, turbo generator room, ship stabilizer and water softening plant. The empty fuel tank inside the vessel is filled with local sludge to keep the center of gravity and ship design at the correct level, as these critical factors have been affected by the removal of various components and structures. Only the stern machine room and the "axis axle", at the stern of the ship, will be spared. The rest of the space will be used for storage or office space.

One problem that arose during the conversion was a dispute between land-based and maritime unions against conversion work. The Coast Guard of the United States has said the end. Queen Mary is considered a building, because most of its propellers have been removed and the engine is gutted. The ship was also repainted with red water level paint at a slightly higher level than before. During the conversion, the funnel is removed, as this area is required to lift the used material from the engine room and the boiler. Workers found that the funnel was significantly degraded and replaced with a replica.

With all the lower decks virtually exterminated from the R deck and down, the Diners Club, the early tenant of the ship, converted the rest of the ship into a hotel. The Diners Club Queen Mary dissolved and emptied the ship in 1970 after its parent company, Diners Club International, was sold, and changes in the direction the company mandated during the conversion process. The Special Restaurant, a Los Angeles-based company focusing on theme-based restaurants, took over as a master lessee the following year.

This second plan is based on converting most first-class and first-class cabins on decks A and B into hotel rooms, and turning the main hall and dining room into a banquet hall. On the Promenade Deck, a closed pedestrian area to feature upscale restaurants and cafes named Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton; it is themed in vessel mode sailing early 19th century. The famous and elegant Observation Bar is redecorated as a western-themed bar.

Smaller first-class public rooms, such as the Picture Room, Library, Lecture Room and Music Studio, will be stripped of most of its equipment and converted into commercial use. The vast retail space on this ship. Two other shopping centers were built in Sun Deck in a separate room previously used for first-class cabins and engineers.

A post-war ship feature, a first-class cinema, has been removed for the kitchen space for the new Promenade Deck dining area. The first-class lounge and smoking room have been configured and converted into a banquet hall. Second class smoking room is divided into wedding chapel and office space. At Sun Deck, the elegant Verandah Grill will be crushed and converted into a fast-food restaurant, while a new upscale dining place is directly above it on the Sports Deck, in a room once used for crewmembers.

The second class sitting room was extended to the side of the ship and used for banquets. On the R deck, first-class dining rooms are configured and subdivided into two banquets, Royal Salon and Windsor Room. The second-class dining room is divided into kitchen storage and crew mess rooms, while the third-class dining room was originally used as a storage space and crew.

Also on the R deck, the first class Turkish bath complex, 1930s equivalent to the spa, was removed. Second class pools have been removed and space originally used for office space, while first class swimming pools are open for viewing by hotel guests and visitors. Due to modern security codes and compromised structural health of the area below, swimming pools can not be used for swimming after conversion, although filled with water until the late 1980s. Today the swimming pool can only be seen on guided tours and in a derelict condition, as it is never managed by hotel operators. No second class, third class, or crew is still intact on the ship at this time.

As a tourist attraction

On May 8, 1971 Queen Mary opened its doors for tourists. Initially, only a portion of the vessel was open to the public because the Special Restaurant had not opened its dining area and the PSA had not completed the job of changing the staterooms First class vessel into the hotel. As a result, the ship was only open on weekends. On December 11, 1971, the Jacques Cousteau Sea Museum was opened, with a quarter of the planned exhibition completed. In this decade, the Cousteau museum was closed due to low ticket sales and the deaths of many fish stored in the museum. On November 2, 1972, PSA Hotel Queen Mary opened its first 150 guest rooms. Two years later, with 400 completed rooms, PSA brought Hyatt Hotel to manage the hotel, which operated from 1974 to 1980 as Queen Mary Hyatt Hotel.

By 1980, it was clear that the existing system was not working. The ship loses millions each year to the city because hotels, restaurants and museums are run by three separate concession holders, while the city owns boats and operates guided tours. It was decided that one operator with more experience in the attraction was required.

Jack Wrather, a local billionaire, falls in love with the ship because he and his wife, Bonita Granville, have fond memories of sailing over and over again. Wrather signed a 66-year contract with the city of Long Beach to operate the entire property. She oversees the Spruce Goose display, long-term loans. The enormous aircraft, which had been sitting in a hangar in Long Beach for decades not seen by the public, was installed in a huge geodesic dome adjacent to the liner in 1983, attracting an increase in attendance.

His Wrather Port Properties operated all attractions after his death in 1984 to 1988, when his ownership was bought by Walt Disney Company. Wrather had built the Disneyland Hotel in 1955, when Walt Disney had insufficient funds to build the resort itself. Disney has been trying to buy a hotel for 30 years. When they finally succeed, they also get Queen Mary. It was never marketed as a Disney property.

Through the late 1980s and early 1990s, Queen Mary struggled financially. Disney put their hopes to change the attractions around Port Disney, a large resort planned on the adjacent dock. It includes a theme park known as DisneySea , themed around the world's oceans. His plan ultimately failed; in 1992 Disney hired a boat rental to focus on building what would become the Disney California Adventure Park. The DisneySea concept was recycled a decade later in Japan as Tokyo DisneySea, with a marine vessel created resembling the Queen Mary named SS Columbia as the center of the American Waterfront area.

With Disney gone, Queen Mary Hotel closed on 30 September 1992. The Spruce Goose Owner, Aero Club of Southern California, sold the plane to Evergreen Aviation & amp. ; Space Museum in Oregon. The plane set off with a barge on October 2, 1992, leaving the vault empty. Queen Mary's attractions stayed open for two months, but on December 31, 1992, Queen Mary closed the door for tourists and visitors.

On February 5, 1993, RMS Foundation, Inc. signed a five-year contract with the city of Long Beach to act as a property operator. The foundation is run by the President and C.E.O. Joseph F. Prevratil, who had arranged interest for Wrather. On February 26, 1993, the tourist attraction was completely reopened, while the hotel reopened partly on March 5 with 125 rooms and banquet facilities, with the rest of the rooms starting on 30 April. In 1995, RMS Foundation leases were extended to twenty years, while the scope of the rent was reduced to ship operations. A new company, Queen's Seaport Development, Inc. (QSDI), was established in 1995 to control the real estate adjacent to the ship. In 1998, the city of Long Beach extended the lease of QSDI to 66 years.

In 2005, QSDI sought Chapter 11 protection because of lease disputes with the city. In 2006, the bankruptcy court requested an offer from interested parties to take over the lease from QSDI. The minimum required opening bid is $ 41 million. The operation of the ship, by the RMS Foundation, remains independent of bankruptcy. In the summer of 2007, Queen Mary the lease was sold to a group called "Save the Queen," managed by Hostmark Hospitality Group.

They plan to develop land adjacent to Queen Mary, and upgrade, renovate and return vessels. During their management, the cabin is updated with iPod battery charging stations and flat-screen TVs and three channels and the waterline area of the ship repainted their original Cunard Red color. Promenade Deck boards by the harbor are restored and repaired. Many lifeboats were repaired and patched, and the boat kitchen was renovated with new equipment.

In 2004, Queen Mary and Stargazer Productions added Tibbies Great American Cabaret to the space previously occupied by the ship bank and the wireless telegraph room. Stargazer Productions and Queen Mary transformed the space into a full-fledged dinner theater with stage, lamps, sounds and wooden flooring.

At the end of September 2009, management of Queen Mary was taken over by Delaware North Companies, which plans to continue the restoration and renovation of the vessel and its properties. They are determined to revitalize and enhance the ship as an attraction. But in April 2011, Long Beach City was informed that Delaware North no longer manages Queen Mary . Garrison Investment Group says the decision is purely business. North Delaware still manages the Soviet submarine Scorpion, which has been a major attraction to Queen Mary's since 1998. Evolution Hospitality, LLC. assumed operational control of Queen Mary on September 23, 2011, with Garrison Investments leasing Queen Mary .

In 2016 Urban Commons, a real estate company, assumes rental of Queen Mary . They reveal plans to extend the vessel extensively over the next year, and to rebuild the 45-hectare parking lot adjacent to boutique hotels, restaurants, marinas, amphitheater, jogging tracks, bike lanes and perhaps a large Ferris wheel, all at a cost of up to $ 250 million.

In July 2017, while making repairs to the bathroom, the workers found the front gear space that once controlled the ships with an anchor of 16 tons. The room was apparently sealed during the 1960s and forgotten for decades.

By 2017, reports on the condition of the vessel are issued. The report notes that not only the hull but also support for improved exhibit areas inside rusty vessels, and that deteriorating ship conditions leave areas such as engine rooms susceptible to flooding. Improvements are estimated to be close to $ 300 million. In November 2016, the City of Long Beach has spent $ 23 million to deal with Queen Mary ' the most important for improvement. John Keisler, director of economic and property development for Long Beach, said: "We have a timeline where engineers believe they can complete these direct projects. This is a big challenge that we can only overcome from time to time; everything is done at once. " The political leaders in Scotland, the birthplace of Queen Mary, have called on British Prime Minister Theresa May to pressure the American government to fund the full repairs of the vessel.

Queens Meeting

On February 23, 2006, RMSÃ, Queen Mary 2 saluted his predecessor when he made a port call in Los Angeles Harbor while on a voyage to Mexico. In March 2011, Queen Mary was honored by MSÃ, Queen Victoria while fireworks were underway, and on March 12, 2013, MSÃ, Queen Elizabeth make a salute when there are fireworks.

The honor was done with the Queen Mary replying with the only air horn working in response to Queen Mary 2 sounding a combination of two new and original horns 1934 Queen Mary horn (loan from Long Beach City). Queen Mary originally had three whistles tuned to 55 Hz, the chosen frequency was therefore low enough so that the very loud sound would not be painful to the human ear.

The modern IMO rules determine the frequency of the horns in the range of 70-200 Hz for ships longer than 200 meters (660 ft). Traditionally, the lower the frequency, the larger the vessel. Queen Mary 2 , with a length of 345 meters (1,132 feet), is given the lowest possible frequency (70 Hz) for the whistle regulations, in addition to the 55 H Hz whistle that is renewed on a permanent loan. Fifty-five Hz is an octave "A" tone above the lowest note of a standard piano keyboard. Airborne whirled airborne "Ion" can be heard at least 10 miles (16 km) away.

W6RO

The original Queen Mary ', a professional manned wireless radio room was removed when the ship was moored in Long Beach. Instead, an amateur radio room is made a deck above the original radio reception room, with some of the original discarded radio equipment used for display purposes. The amateur radio station, with a W6RO call sign ("Whiskey Six Romeo Oscar"), relies on volunteers from local amateur radio clubs. They staff the radio room for most of the public hours. The radio can also be used by other licensed amateur radio operators.

In honor of his over forty years of dedication to W6RO and Queen Mary, in November 2007, the Queen Mary Wireless Room was renamed the Nate Brightman Radio Room. It was announced on October 28, 2007, at Brightman's 90th birthday party by Joseph Prevratil, former President and CEO of Queen Mary.

Legendary Haunting

Following the Queen Mary ' s docking permanently in California, a claim was made that the ship was haunted. One of his cabins was allegedly haunted by the spirits of the man allegedly murdered there. The Queen Mary operates the experience of commercial haunted attractions, such as the "Haunted Encounters Tour" and "Ghosts and Legends" tour, featuring "frightening original stories and characters based on the ship's famous paranormal story".
