Komani , formerly known as Queenstown , is a town in the middle of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, approximately midway between the town of Cathcart and Sterkstroom. It is now a commercial, administrative, and educational center in a prosperous agricultural area.
The former city nickname, 'Rose Capital of South Africa', comes from large gardens and a place of interest for flowers (especially roses) in and around the city.
The city is the center of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Queenstown. Churches of all religious denominations can be found in and around Komani.

Histori
The city was founded in early 1853 under the direction of Sir George Cathcart, who named the settlement, and then the fortress, after Queen Victoria. Work on a train connection to East London on the coast was started by the government of Cape John Molteno in 1876, and the line was officially opened on May 19, 1880.
The city war memorial was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1922 with his statue by Alice Meredith Williams.
The city has prospered since its founding until the depression around the world in the 1930s, and again thereafter. In the 1960s, the majority of the Black population was moved east to the Ezibeleni municipality, as part of an effort to move the Africans into so-called "homeland". Regions in the past have very severe weather problems, fortunately, often only affect the surrounding area. In 2002, heavy snowfall around Queenstown caused a major disaster, especially since the area was not funded or prepared for such disasters. Then, in 2004, the area around the Eastern Cape was affected by strong winds and heavy rain, although Queenstown once again escaped floods and some wind damage, shortage of electricity soon followed. Other natural disasters include drought and fire veld (forest fires).

Geography
Environment
Komani (Queenstown) is situated on the Komani River which is part of the Great Kei river system and has a refreshing climate and abundant water supply from the surrounding rugged mountains. Water collected at Bonkolo (renamed from Bongolo recently) The dam, located in the hills, is used extensively for recreational and water sports. Every year, around early June, the city holds art exhibitions with an emphasis on paintings and sculptures. May be inspired by some of Bushman's most interesting paintings in nearby caves, which are accessible to visitors.
Close to Komani is a nature reserve (Lawrence de Lange Game Reserve) with many antelopes, white rhinos and spectacular flowering plants along with panoramic views from the top of the mountain.
Layout
Hexagon
The layout of Komani (Queenstown) reflects its original purpose as a bastion of defense for the border area and has the most unusual design. There is a central hexagonal area where canons or gun shots can be directed to six highways radiating from the center. The canon sites have now been replaced with parks and fountains centers are a dominant feature. A striking abstract sculpture replaced the fountain as part of the city's 150th anniversary. hexagon is still there, with an outer ring surround it called Robinson Road , which encloses it. Surrounding Hexagon in the east and west lies more commercial and administrative facilities.
City Layout â ⬠<â â¬
Like all cities in South Africa, the city is very separate, and although blacks are now free to travel, work, live and shop in the commercial and residential sectors, there is some integration. Most blacks do not earn enough money to live in richer suburbs. Currently, the earlier 'white fringe' surrounds the hexagon in the north, east and west, however, one of the major city cities (and wild camps) is located in the south. It is a collection of black and colored cities named Mlungisi, Aloevale and many others, but due to its ongoing expansion, a new town, Victoria Park has been built in the southeast of the city. As for the actual city of Komani (Queenstown), it includes the suburbs of Sandringham, Kingsway, Windsor, Bergsig, Blue rise, Balmoral, Madeira Park and a new fast-growing Komani Park suburb. In recent years, growth has slowed down in this part of the city, with the only real expansion in some small gated community in Komani Park and north of the city.
The eastern city lies the much larger Ezibeleni town, which although roughly the same surface area as Komani (Queenstown), has a much larger population.

Geology
The Komani area is in the Burgersdorp formation of the Tarkastad subgroup, in the upper Beauas Group Trias at age in the super karoo group. Litology is a red stone red 1 to 10 m rich layer and sub-ordinate 1 to 2 m rich layer of sandstone deposited by winding rivers in the flood plains in the oxidation environment gradually filled the Karoo basin. The formation reached a thickness of 600 m in the area of ââKomani (Queenstown) and Lady Frere (S.gcobo). Many dikes and dolerite ring structures penetrate the area creating a good location for groundwater exploration.

Community media is also an integral part of Komani. The city has a newspaper called Representative, known as Rep, as well as The Express and community radio station, Lukhanji fm. The Eastern Cape newspaper, Daily Dispatch, is widely read in the area.
