Yamato nadeshiko ( ??????? or ) is a Japanese term meaning "personification of an idealized Japanese woman ", or" a pure and feminine beauty symbol ". It is a flower metaphor, combining the words Yamato , an ancient name for Japanese, and nadeshiko , a fine pink carnation called Dianthus superbus , whose kanji was translated into English as a "carable child".
The term "Yamato nadeshiko" is often used in reference to a shy young girl or woman and, in a contemporary context, nostalgic women with good qualities are perceived to be increasingly scarce. However, Nadeshiko Japan is also widely used as a name for Japan's national women's soccer team.
