Campus

QMHS is located at the Metropolitan Education Campus, located on the south side of Metropolitan Avenue east of Woodhaven Boulevard. This block, which is shared with shopping centers, was once a superblock industry. The campus is built between the currently inactive Rockaway Beach Branch and the Montauk Branch which only operates on Long Island Rail Road, on the site where the track from Montauk Branch previously curved northward to the Rockaway Branch to the Main Line, and adjacent to Parkside Station. The original plan called for buildings to accommodate two primary or secondary schools and two 500-seat secondary schools, adding more than 2,000 Queens school public seats in total. When built, the campus added 1,911 seats.

QMHS shares building space with Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School, grades 6 to 12 schools. The campus also hosts the new Maspeth High School, until environmental security issues at the site allow for the official opening of the school in 2012.

There are two entrances: the famous ones on Metropolitan Avenue, and the lesser known ones behind the school near Union Turnpike. Each school has its own facilities, including classrooms, libraries, and cafeterias. QHMS has two cafeterias (Red and Blue) and two gymnasiums. The campus auditorium is distributed.

History

The campus was formally proposed in 2005, although the proposal has worked for nearly two decades. The campus is proposed to reduce density in some local schools, especially Hills High School, and due to the lack of high school facilities in Glendale, Ridgewood and Maspeth areas in the School District 24. Construction is planned to begin in the summer of 2005, with the opening of facilities in time for autumn 2010. Construction will begin in 2006, and the building is completed before the academic year 2010-2011. In September of that year, Queens Metropolitan High School (unnamed before 2010) opened its doors for 350 students, with plans to eventually reach 1,000 students.

By 2014, schools have a four-year pass rate of 89%, and high-quality review ratings.
