Forest Hills is a station on the Long Island Rail Road in Forest Hills. Like any other LIRR station in New York City, passengers can take advantage of the CityTicket program on weekends. It's slightly used compared to other stations in the city, with only 1,116 passengers on weekdays; many residents chose the subway due to its improved services and express trains directly to Midtown Manhattan.

Lokasi

Located in a Queens neighborhood of the same name, Forest Hills is located on 71st Avenue (formerly known as Continental Avenue) between Austin and Burns Streets. It is also the northern boundary of Station Square, a historic downtown Tudor, located opposite a building known as the "Forest Hills Inn." The station is also east of the West Side Tennis Club. Two blocks north along 71st Avenue is the Forest Hills-71st Avenue subway station, one of Queens's busiest.

History

Built in 1910, the Forest Hills station is one of the oldest passenger train stations operating in New York City, preceding the IND subway expansion into the area in the mid-1930s. After being renovated for flawed accessibility with ramps, this is one of two LIRR stations without the standard blue and white (the other being Nostrand Avenue). Instead there are placards and antique signs that complement the surrounding area. On July 4, 1917, former President Theodore Roosevelt made "Unification Speech" from the steps of this station.

Station layout

The local station, Forest Hills has two side platforms and four lanes. Platform A serves trains westward to Penn Station, while Platform B serves trains heading east on the outskirts of Long Island; both are four long cars. Two inner tracks are used by express trains, although bridge plates are sometimes used to bridge the outer tracks during a track job. The relatively flat and straight track in Forest Hills has been used for speed tests of PATH PA-1 and R44.
