Histori

The Queens Boulevard Line is one of the first lines built by the city's Independent Subway System (IND), and runs between IND Eighth Avenue Line in Manhattan and 179th Street and Hillside Avenue in Jamaica, Queens. The Queens Boulevard Line is partially financed by Public Works Administration (PWA) loans and a grant of $ 25,000,000. One of the proposed stations will be located at 71st Avenue. During the late 1920s, to anticipate the arrival of the subway, land was bought by developers and built. The zoning law was changed to allow fifteen-story building buildings to be built, and made the Forest Hills neighborhood a more desirable place to live in, especially as it was an express stop. Queens Borough President George Harvey predicted that the introduction of the subway to Forest Hills would turn Queens Boulevard into "Park Avenue of Queens."

On December 31, 1936, the IND Queens Boulevard Line was extended by eight stops, and 3.5 miles (5.6 km) from the previous terminal on Roosevelt Avenue to Union Turnpike, and the 71st Avenue station was opened as part of this extension.

The station is proposed as a transfer station between the Queens Bypass Express-Express that was never built as part of the 1968 Action Program, which will significantly expand the train and subway services in five areas. Under the plan of 1984, the new express station will be one of three stops in the 74th Street Extension east of 21st Street-Queensbridge, the other two stopping on North Boulevard and Woodside. The bypass station will have a mezzanine, two level platforms (top platform for Jamaica and Queens-bound trains, lower platform for Manhattan rail), new lift entrance, and expanded mezzanine, with escalators and ladders connecting new platform levels to platform which exists. The new station will be built on the south side of Queens Boulevard, south of the existing station.

In 2014, the Metropolitan Transport Authority built a new signal tower for the Manhattan-bound platform. The agency also increased the station to comply with the 1990 American Act with Disability; upgrades include passenger elevators to serve road, mezzanine and platforms. The project was completed in March 2014 after a three-month delay. However, ribbon cuts for new elevators are not held until May 2014.

Station layout

The station has four lanes and two island platforms. This is the northern terminal for the local M and R trains, which stop in the outer lane. To the east, the line widened to six tracks, with two tracks starting between local tracks and express in each direction, then down to the lower level, where they widen to four tracks and walk below the 75th Avenue station to Jamaica Yard. Train F stops on an express line at any time, but switches to local tracks to the east and continues to Jamaica-179th Street. Trains E stop at the express line at any time except late at night, when they stop along the Queens Boulevard Line. To the east, they continue on the express track (excluding evenings and weekends when they switch to local tracks such as F ) to Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer, with a limited 179-hour rush-express service. This station has four boxes of two spikes on the eastern and western ends.

Both outer track walls have lime green tile ribbons with black borders and small "71st AVE" signs underneath, in white letters on black tiles. Station columns are painted in lime green with signs that read "71 - Forest Hills", while older marks on black columns between express rails read CONTINENTAL AVENUE - Forest Hills in black on white borders.

A signal tower and dispatcher office are located at the far western end of the southern platform.

Exit

There are two tariff control areas on a full width mezzanine on platforms and tracks. The western part of the mezzanine is bordered on the west by an exit to the west side of 70th Road and the north side of Queens Boulevard. There used to be a part-time booth at this location. At the eastern end, the tariff control area is on the side of the exit from the tariff control that links the exit between 70th Road and 71st Avenue. There used to be a part-time booth in the northern part of the hall. The elevator is located at the south exit between 70th Road and 71st Avenue and makes an ADA-accessible station. The second tariff control area is between the tariff-free aisles and the connecting corridors to the exit at 71st Avenue. At the eastern end of the mezzanine there is a stairway leading to Queens Boulevard between 71st Avenue and 71st Road on the north side, and a ladder leads to the intersection of 71st Avenue and Queens Boulevard on the south side. There are seven stairs to each platform.
