the national flag of Latvia was used by independent Latvia from 1918 until it was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940. Its use was suppressed during the Soviet government. Shortly before regaining its independence, Latvia was re-adopted on 27 February 1990 with the same red-and-white-red flag.
Although officially adopted in 1923, the Latvian flag was used in the early 13th century. The color red is sometimes described as a symbol of the Latvian readiness to give blood from their hearts for their freedom and their willingness to defend their freedom. An alternative interpretation, according to one legend, is that a Latvian leader is wounded in battle, and the edges of a white sheet in which he is wrapped is stained by his blood. White lines may stand up to the sheets that wrap them. This story is similar to the legend of the origin of the Austrian flag.

Histori
The red-white-red Latvian flag (German: dead Banier der Letten ) was first mentioned in the chapters of the Rhymed Chronicle of Livonia (i) LivlÃÆ'ändische Reimchronik ). This historical evidence places the Latvian flag among the world's oldest flags. This chronicle tells of battles occurring around 1279, where the ancient Latvian tribes of the CÃ'sis, a city in northern Latvia, went to war, carrying a red flag with a white stripe.
The legend refers to a wounded Latvian wounded head that is wrapped in a white cloth. The part of the sheet where he lay remained white, but both ends were stained in his blood. During the ensuing battle, bloodstained sheets are used as flags. According to legend this time the Latvian warriors succeeded and drove out the enemy. Since that time the Latvians have used these colors.
Based on these historical records, the current flag design was adapted by artist Ansis C? Rulis in May 1917. The national flag of Latvia, together with the national emblem affirmed in this format with a special parliamentary decision of the Latvian Republic was adopted on June 15, 1921.
Jobs
During the period of occupation by the Soviet Union (and briefly by Nazi Germany), the red-white-red Latvian flag was made useless from 1940-1941 and 1944-1991. Any production and public display of a nationalist Latvia flag is considered an anti-state crime and may be punishable by law. The first flag is a red flag with a golden hammer and sickle in the upper left corner, with the Latin LPSR (Latvijas Padomju Soci? Listisk? Republika) on it with gold in serif. Beginning in 1953, the final version of the flag was adopted. It depicts a Soviet flag with six 1/3 blue waves representing the sea at the bottom.
Recovery
Under the influence of Mikhail Gorbachev glasnost and perestroika initiatives, the independent Latvian flag was restored on 15 February 1990, 1½ years before the official recognition of Latvian independence.
