Life

Initial life

Charo was born MarÃÆ'a del Rosario Mercedes Pilar MartÃÆ'nez Molina Baeza in Murcia, Region of Murcia, Spain. His father was reportedly a lawyer who fled to Casablanca during Francisco Franco's dictatorship, while his housewife lived in Murcia, raising their children.

Charo sometimes claims that he enrolled in a convent as a child and remained there until he was 15 years old, when a nun declared that he was in the show business. In the most colorful version of this childhood, Charo's grandmother hired a music professor to give her classical guitar lessons weekly, and she became the first person to enter the convent.

Most sources indicate that he studied classical guitar and flamenco at a school in Madrid founded by AndrÃÆ'Â ss Segovia for underprivileged children. In a 2005 interview, he recalled: "This institution has great teachers and young students, it's a charity, Mr. Segovia, between the concerts that's when he comes, and if you're there a year and you're not good, you'll go out and they will give your place to other young people. "Charo has stated in several interviews that he graduated with honors at the age of 16.

Charo was found as a young player by the band's leader Xavier Cugat, who later married on August 7, 1966. When they married, Cugat was 66 years old and married four times (Rita Montaner, Carmen Castillo, Lorraine Allen and Abbe Lane) sometimes there are fewer marriages. Column of April 1966 by Earl Wilson on the couple's wedding plans announced, "Xavier Cugat is sixty years old and Xavier Cugat [20 years old] [ sic ] Spanish girlfriend and singing star Charo hopes to get married in San Cugat , Spain, within days if Cugat can convince church authorities, his two divorces should not be counted against him because he is not married in church. "

The couple were the first to have their marriage at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. He later claimed that his marriage to Cugat was just a business contract, a way for him to legally take him to the United States where he was headquartered.

He moved to West 257th Street in The Bronx, New York with his mother and aunt, and was regularly featured in performances by Cugat orchestra in New York and Las Vegas, as well as overseas engagements in Latin America and Europe. He claims that he is confident of his success from the start, and that he gave him Rolls-Royce as a farewell gift after he was officially coming from a majority age.

Career

Charo's first US TV appearance was at The Today Show . From 1965-67, she appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show four times with her husband Xavier Cugat and her orchestra. She appeared in Laugh-In in 1968. She will appear in short chatfests for a few minutes towards the end of the show with Dan Rowan and Dick Martin. His lack of fluency in English is played as a comic focus, with two hosts laughing at his chaotic English. It was around this time that he started using "cuchi cuchi" in the public arena.

1970s

He became headlining the Vegas show in 1971 and reportedly paid as much as Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles or Dean Martin. In 1977, he became a naturalized United States citizen. In the same year he filed for divorce from Cugat, a petition granted on April 14, 1978.

On August 11, 1978, he married his second husband, Kjell Rasten, a producer, in South Lake Tahoe, California, during a civil ceremony attended by 30 guests. Rasten soon became his wife's manager and the couple had one son, a son, Shel Rasten (born 1981), who was the drummer for the heavy metal band Treazen.

Throughout the 1970s, he was a very visible personality, appeared eight times at The Love Boat , as well as in various and talk shows such as Donny & amp; Marie , Tony Orlando and Dawn , The Captain and Tennille, The John Davidson Show , which he hosts at least once, and spin off short-lived Brady Bunch .

In 1975, Dallas Morning News critic Harry Bowman wrote that the ABC network had "written down... a half-hour comedy starring unbridled wife of Xavier Cugat" and commented, "This is probably the worst. this. "In October of that year, the player promoted a special event for November, but the special event did not really appear until May 1976.

A TV list for 24 August 1976, showing what appeared to be a pilot that was not aired on ABC at 8:30 CST: " Charo and Sergeant - A comedy situation starring Charo Cugat Charo's first job in the US is to be a nightclub dancer and her husband's conservative Marine Corps knowing it.Several of the recorded episodes were finally broadcast on the US Armed Forces Network abroad. "

In the late 1970s, Charo was mentioned as an example of how overexposure can damage celebrities. One such article quoted Q's Q score from Performer Q, celebrity popularity rating service Steve Levitt, to show that the player's popularity declined slightly even as his intimacy increased:

Before he gained national fame in a talk show in 1975, the bosomy star Charo was 'recognized' by 57 percent of Levitt's national television samples and had a 9 percent 'popularity'. Today, it is known 80 percent, Clint Eastwood's 80 percent high, Charo's popularity of 8 percent. 'If he's known by 100 percent of the world, his chances of popularity will drop to 7 or 6 percent', Levitt said calmly. The paradox makes some players think twice when an invite for a talk show comes in.

Post-1970s

For much of the late 1980s and 1990s, Charo had limited visibility when he moved to Hawaii and opened and performed at his own dinner theater while he and Rasten brought up their son. Due to the large number of Japanese descendants in Hawaii, Charo learns to speak Japanese.

In 2000, he returned to television in advertisements for Sprint's wireless phone service and GEICO insurance, as well as guest appearances at Hollywood Squares , three seasons on the Celeb-reality series The Surreal Life , describes himself on the episode of Fox Network's That '70s Show , and the appearance on VH1's I Love the' 70s retrospective. Birth controversy

The year of Charo's birth has been the subject of much debate over the years. The official document at the birthplace of Charo di Murcia, the original Spanish passport, and the naturalization paper stated that the date of birth was March 13, 1941. After immigrating to the United States, Charo said that he was born in 1947, then turned it into 1949. He asserted in court in 1977 that his passport and naturalization paper were wrong and that his actual date of birth was January 15, 1951.

He never clarified the obvious difference. Many articles and interviews were published shortly before and at the time of her marriage put her year of birth between 1945 and 1946. In 1964, Charo was referred to as 18-year-old "protegà © Å © e" Cugat. The April 1966 column of marriage plans stated that he was 20 years old and Cugat was 60 years old.
