MarÃÆ'a del Rosario Mercedes Pilar MartÃÆ'nez Molina Baeza , professionally known only under his stage name Charo , is a Spanish-American actress, comedian actress, and flamenco.
Charo started playing guitar at the age of nine and trained under the famous AndrÃÆ'® s Segovia. In 1966, he married band leader Xavier Cugat and they moved to the United States. In the late 1960s and 1970s, he became present everywhere on American television, often appearing as guest stars in series such as Laugh-In, Fantasy Island and The Love Boat . He is known for his unimpeded and passionate manner, lack of fluency in English, and a heavy Spanish accent, and the term "cuchi-cuchi".
As a musician, he has been featured and recorded in various styles for five decades. He released a series of disco recordings in the 1970s with Salsoul Records, notably the Dance a Little Clos Closer (1977). In 1995, her flamenco album Guitar Passion (1994) won the Women's Pop Album Award of the Year at the Billboard International Latin Music Conference and was named the best female pop pop album by Billboard. . Initial life
Charo was born MarÃÆ'a del Rosario Mercedes Pilar MartÃÆ'nez Molina Baeza in Murcia, Region of Murcia, Spain. His father was reportedly a lawyer who fled to Casablanca during Francisco Franco's dictatorship, while his housewife lived in Murcia, raising their children.
Charo sometimes claims that he enrolled in a convent as a child and remained there until he was 15 years old, when a nun declared that he was in the show business. In the most colorful version of this childhood, Charo's grandmother hired a music professor to give her classical guitar lessons weekly, and she became the first person to enter the convent.
Most sources indicate that he studied classical guitar and flamenco at a school in Madrid founded by AndrÃÆ'Â ss Segovia for underprivileged children. In a 2005 interview, he recalled: "This institution has great teachers and young students, it's a charity, Mr. Segovia, between the concerts that's when he comes, and if you're there a year and you're not good, you'll go out and they will give your place to other young people. The couple were the first to have their marriage at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. He later claimed that his marriage to Cugat was just a business contract, a way for him to legally take him to the United States where he was headquartered.
He moved to West 257th Street in The Bronx, New York with his mother and aunt, and was regularly featured in performances by Cugat orchestra in New York and Las Vegas, as well as overseas engagements in Latin America and Europe. Career
Charo's first US TV appearance was at The Today Show . From 1965-67, she appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show four times with her husband Xavier Cugat and her orchestra. She appeared in Laugh-In in 1968. In 2000, he returned to television in advertisements for Sprint's wireless phone service and GEICO insurance, as well as guest appearances at Hollywood Squares , three seasons on the Celeb-reality series The Surreal Life , describes himself on the episode of Fox Network's That '70s Show , and the appearance on VH1's I Love the' 70s retrospective. Birth controversy
The year of Charo's birth has been the subject of much debate over the years. The official document at the birthplace of Charo di Murcia, the original Spanish passport, and the naturalization paper stated that the date of birth was March 13, 1941. After immigrating to the United States, Charo said that he was born in 1947, then turned it into 1949. He asserted in court in 1977 that his passport and naturalization paper were wrong and that his actual date of birth was January 15, 1951.
The viewer has said in interviews that his parents allowed him to falsify his age to look older when married 66-year-old band leader Xavier Cugat in 1966, although according to his later claim, it would have made him 15 at the time.
