Carvel is an ice cream franchise owned by Focus Brands. Carvel is famous for its soft ice cream and ice cream cake, featuring a unique 'crunchies' layer. It also sells a variety of new ice cream and ice cream sandwich bars.

Carvel was founded and operated by Tom Carvel for the first 60 years. In 1929, Carvel borrowed $ 15 ($ 200 today) from his future wife, Agnes, and used it to buy and operate an ice cream truck. During the Memorial Day weekend of 1934, the Carvel truck had a flat tire in Hartsdale, New York. Carvel sells his pudding at the damage location. Within two days, Carvel had sold all of its shares, mostly melting. He realizes that fixed location and soft frozen desserts (as opposed to hard) is a good business idea. In his first year, he made over $ 3,500. In 1937 he had a coffer on the Hartsdale website, with a freezer that allowed him to make his own frozen pudding. In 1939, gross was over $ 6,000. The original Hartsdale store closed on 5 October 2008.
In the early 1940s, Tom Carvel traveled, selling custards at the carnival, while his wife, Agnes, manages the Hartsdale location. During World War II he runs an ice cream kiosk at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, gaining expertise in cooling technology. He created and patented a freezer, "Custard King", and in 1947 sold 71 freezers priced at $ 2,900 each. Some freezer buyers fail to make payments on the unit. After investigation, Carvel discovered that they are running their business inefficiently, choosing a bad location and not always maintaining high standards of health. Carvel decided that the best course would be to participate in running its freezer customer operations. He later claimed this prompted him to develop the concept of a franchise.

Carvel popularized various items of "novelty" ice cream, such as "Flying Saucer", a round ice cream sandwich, "Icy Wycy", a piece of sherbet paper on a stick, "Brown Bonnet" and "Cherry Bonnet," frozen vanilla ice cream on sugar cones dipped in sweet candy, "Tortoni", a cup of vanilla ice cream coated with grilled coconut and topped with cherry maraschino, and "Lollapalooza", cylindrical ice cream on a stick covered with colored sprinkles, and "Mamapalooza" and " Papapalooza ".

Carvel introduced Lil 'Love ice cream cake on March 30, 1998. The ad, which first appeared in the introduction, showed little children in special situations, such as missing baby teeth, starring in class, getting A grades in school classes, and getting glasses (sung to the song "Ta-ra-ra Boom-de-ay"). A mother presents a new cake to celebrate. All ads carry tag line Surprise someone special tonight.
Franchise and ad
In 1949, Carvel started the franchise under the name "Carvel Dari-Freez". In the early 1950s, the company had more than 50 stores. The new franchise conducted an 18-day training program at "Carvel College of Ice Cream Knowledge", and sent a magazine at home called "The Shopper's Road". In addition, Carvel also provides plans to build a franchise, which initially are stand-alone glass fronted shops.
In 1955, Tom Carvel began recording his own radio ad. An unfounded anecdote tells us that he was driving in New York City, and heard an ad for a new Carvel store that did not mention the location of the new store. Sure he can do better, he goes to the radio station and does the next ad himself. True or not, from 1955 onwards, Carvel recorded almost all of the chain advertising, eventually retaining an in-house production studio in headquarters, and became a kind of local celebrity.
Carvel ads stand out and increase brand awareness primarily due to a lack of sophistication. Carvel has a distinctive "pebble" sound, without the "slick" sound of professional voice artists, and all its narratives are unthinkable. His words are conversations, with ads often ending with the words "Thank You". Television commercials, aired primarily in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut's three-state territory, began in 1971. Accompanied by familiar Tom Carvel narratives, record shows of products, and employees in stores; very few graphs or effects are used.
Promotion is part of Carvel's practice from the start. In 1936, they had a "Buy One Free One" promotion, and in subsequent years had various contests. They are early users of corporate sponsorship of various events and tie promotions, including relationships with the New York Yankees. The long-running and famous campaign is "Wednesday is Sundae in Carvel!" discount.
In 1956, Carvel transformed Hartsdale's location into their first "Ice Cream Supermarket" by adding a freezer box of ready-made cookies and new items that customers could choose and buy. In 1955, Carvel began a "land lease" program, in which a potential investor could buy land, build a franchise, then lease it back to the company.
Carvel experimented with a wide selection of ice cream vehicles for much of their early history. The concept of the vehicle included a scooter (around 1957) and a special truck, "Carvehicle", for which they filed several patents (circa 1958).
Disputes with franchisees emerged in 1962. Independent owners tried to buy products from outside the company's supply chain (contrary to their contracts), maintaining that the company was deliberately overloading them. Carvel argues that franchisees try to use lesser materials. As well as a direct impact on the company's cash flow, this damages the company's image, reducing the chain to 175 stores. When corporations try to enforce this contract, the Federal Trade Commission sues them to withhold trade. The legal process reached the United States Supreme Court in 1964, with the company emerging as the winner.
In 1967, the company purchased the Westchester Town House Motel, on Tuckahoe Road in Yonkers, New York and named it the Carvel Inn, converting it to use as a corporate headquarters, while still operating as a hotel, providing them with a conference center for annual franchisee conventions.
During the late 1970s, Carvel sought to distinguish itself from other soft ice cream suppliers by claiming that the ice cream machine did not put the product into the air, unlike the competition.
During the 1970s, when diet and fitness became more popular, Carvel began offering a low-fat, frozen dessert called Thinny-Thin ("Thinny-Thin, for your fatty friends"), and a frozen yogurt product called Lo -Yo.
From 1973 to 1975, Carvel published a promotional comic book.
In 1983, Saturday Night Live parodied the Carvel ad campaign during the 9th episode of the show season, with Joe Piscopo portraying Tom Carvel becoming increasingly distracted by the line of X-rated Christmas cake franchises shaped like breasts, buttocks, testicles and penises. In the same year, Beastie Boys released their first single, Cooky Puss , which included audio from rap bands that made prank phone calls to Carvel stores.
In 1985, there were 865 stores with revenues of more than $ 300 million.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Howard Stern used a vocal harmonizer to mimic the "outer space" sounds of Cookie Puss used in Carvel TV commercials. Stern also often makes reference to the misunderstanding and simplicity of old colleague Fred Norris for ever giving his mother a Cookie Puss cookie as a Mother's Day gift.
In 2013, WWE wrestler The Rock mentioned Carvel (as well as competing Dairy Queen) and his Cookie Puss cookie during the segment on the episode of WWE Raw , under the name Cookie Puss used as an insult to CM Punk, which Rock successfully challenged for the WWE Championship.
Today
In 1989, the aged Tom Carvel sold his company to Investcorp for more than $ 80 million. In 1991, the base was moved to Farmington, Connecticut.
On December 11, 2001, Roark Capital Group, a private equity firm, purchased a controlling stake in Carvel Corporation from Investcorp. Investcorp becomes a minority shareholder.
Carvel is for the most part the history of regional business, most strongly based on the east coast of the United States. As the business climate has changed, so has some of the focus of the brand. There are, by 2016, about 400 retail franchises and food service locations, much less than at its peak. Carvel-branded products are available in more than 9,500 supermarkets. Celebration Foods has encouraged brand presence from 30 countries in 2004 to 49 in 2008, enabling them to form trade partnerships with national brands, such as ice cream cake featuring Mars M & amp; M. Focus Brands based in Atlanta, Georgia, Celebration Foods based in New Britain, Connecticut.
In August 2007, the current owner of the original Carvel location at Hartsdale revealed that he had applied for permission to knock down the store and develop a retail strip on the property. In March 2009, the Hartsdale store was demolished to pave the way for Japanese restaurants.
