Egyptian Cotton vs Sateen Sheets: Differences and Benefits ...
src: sleepopolis.com

Sateen is a fabric made using satin woven structures but made with non-filaments.

The sheen and soft flavor of the sateen is generated through a satay weave structure. The warp thread floats above the thread of feed, for example four on top and one below. (In satin or saten-faced feed, weft thread floats above the warp thread.) The plain weave standard uses one-top structure, one below. Long buoys produce a smooth surface to touch and reduce light scattering to increase luster. This weaving structure is more susceptible to use than any other weaving.

In modern times, less expensive rayons are often replaced with cotton. Better quality is dircerized to provide higher luster. Some are just calendered to produce luster, but these disappear with washing.
