Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a musical with a book by Australian film directors Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott, using popular pop songs as their value. Adapted from Elliott's 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the musical tells the story of two drag queens and a transgender woman, who contracts to perform a drag show at a resort in Alice Springs, a resort town in Australia's remote desert. As they head west from Sydney on their lavender bus, Priscilla, the three friends come to the forefront of comedy errors, facing a number of strange characters, as well as homophobic incidents, while the comfort zone widened and found new horizons.

Produced by Allan Scott in a coalition with Back Row Productions, Michael Chugg, Michael Hamlyn and John Frost, Simon Phillips-directed and Ross Coleman-original production choreographer Priscilla debuted in Australia at Lyric Theater, Sydney in October 2006 After successful runs in Sydney, production was moved to Melbourne in 2007 and then Auckland, New Zealand in 2008, before returning to Sydney for a limited engagement. The success of Australasia Priscilla provoked two years of strong West End production in addition to Bette Midler's debut-produced Broadway in 2011. While original production received one of seven Helpmann Award nominations, Priscilla was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical as well as two Tony Awards, won this award in the costume design category.

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is considered to be 'the most successful gay male representation' in Australian production history. Priscilla deals with sexuality and gender issues. Highly praised for 'challenging traditional Australian ideas of masculinity'. Priscilla is against stereotypes and empowering the LGBTQ community. Focusing on 2 queer drag queens and a glamorous transgender woman, in the empty and empty desert shows homosexuality pushed to the periphery, but continues to celebrate the difference. Priscilla shows the masculinity in these characters by conquering the desert, with obstacles. This automatically challenges the idea that masculine men are better equipped and instead show a gay man doing what a straight man can do, wearing women's clothes. Priscilla continues to praise the differences and challenge the views of mainstream society and culture. It shows that what people say is not always true.

Critical reception

In reviewing the West End production, the Evening Standard reviewer of London Evening Standard writes: "From the first moment when three hanging divas hung high over the silver bridge and belt at Downtown, the show never lost The spectacular momentum, riding from the songs dragged on by the lips-sync lips. "

Reviews for Toronto production include praise for the costumes of Globe and Mail : "The costumes designed by Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner, the same team that won the Oscars for the film, are an incredible blend of Villagers meeting with Tim Burton reaching its peak, on a curtain call, a bunch of koala insects and 'roos.' The Star writes well: "The rabbit that touches the eye, this very beautiful ear moves like a cyclone from start to finish and will make you breathless on various occasions, thanks to spectacular spectacles, lewd humor and performances virtuoso. Dispute on the use of recorded music

The use of string sections recorded in the production of Broadway Priscilla causes a dispute between the manufacturer and the Federation of American Musicians (AFM). AFM believes that using the recording as a substitute for live music is a marginal cost-saving measure that deceives the audience from the rich and rich live orchestral sound. Producers argue that the artistic conception of the show requires a "synthetic pop flavor" that can only be achieved with recorded music. AFM member Scott Frankel, who composed music for Gray Gardens, states: "What is most special about seeing Broadway music, rather than some other art form, is the interaction between orchestral musicians and performers on stage ". The dispute is currently awaiting arbitration.
