Plot
Springfield Elementary School held a school week, in which Lisa bought a caricature of herself drawn at a carnival booth. He was horrified to see the unattractive images and reactions of the people around him. Homer won the fair sweepstakes, with the ultimate prize being a ride on Duff Blimp. Back home, Lisa cried because she felt unattractive. Homer spotted a TV ad saying Laramie Cigarettes sponsored the "Little Miss Springfield" contest this year, and decided to include Lisa to increase her self-esteem. The entry fee for the contest is $ 250, so he sells his Duff Blimp ticket to Barney to raise the necessary funds. Homer excitedly told Lisa that she had put her in the contest, but she refused. However, Marge tells Lisa that Homer sold her Duff Blimp ticket to pay the entrance fee, and she realizes her father's sacrifice and enters the contest.
On contest registration, Lisa meets a formidable competitor named Amber Dempsey, a blonde girl who is tricked by using an eyelash implants from Paraguay to make her look sweeter. In preparation for the contest, Lisa received a makeover at a beauty salon, training her brother, Bart, and encouragement from her family. The day of the contest arrives, and Lisa on the floor explains her goal to make Springfield a better place, while Amber wins the audience adoration by blinking her big eyelashes. Lisa's talent is a medley jazzy "America the Beautiful" and "Proud Mary". After the interview segment of Krusty the Clown, Lisa was announced as runner-up and Amber the winner. At Amber's first official appearance, a lightning storm creates a lightning strike that attacks his metal rod. She was hospitalized for her injuries, and Lisa was crowned Little Miss Springfield.
One of Little Miss Springfield's duties as a spokesperson for the Laramie Cigarettes contest, is to provoke a younger demographic into smoking. Instead, Lisa protests against the dangers of cigarettes on her appearance, and also vows to target the Mayor Quimby's corruption. Quimby and Laramie officials are looking for ways to lower and silence Lisa. They found a technical error on the entry form: Homer writes "OK" under the "Do not write in this space" instruction. Amber crushed Little Miss Springfield. At home, Homer is upset that he sacrificed Lisa's title, but Lisa reminds Homer that he put it in a contest to help her self-esteem, and thanked him for it worked. Homer asks him to remember "the next time I ruin your life", which Lisa gladly agrees and hugs her.

Production
Many authors of The Simpsons abandoned the show or did not attend the beginning of the fourth season, which made Al Jean and Mike Reiss to brainstorm the plot ideas only. After brainstorming "Homer the Heretic", they thought about Lisa entering a beauty contest. They commissioned Jeff Martin to write the episode because they thought he would fill it with a song, just like he did on the previous episode. Martin was obliged, and wrote his episodes and music. He also based the episode on some of his own experiences, such as the scene in which Lisa has a caricature of herself. According to Jeff Martin, "I'm not sure if we can do this episode today.people have a more innocent view of child beauty contests before JonBenet Ramsey."
The episode featured 89-year-old Bob Hope as a guest star, with her portion recorded at her home by Jeff Martin and Conan O'Brien. Yet he is depicted as his young, Vietnam's own War era.
Cultural reference
This episode makes several references to popular culture and history. One of the opening scenes saw Principal Skinner crashing into a man in a way very similar to Mick Dundee in Crocodile Dundee. This episode includes scenes based on Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now , where Lisa and Bob Hope escaped from the Fort Springfield stage. It also made two references to Star Wars, in which caricature artists featured caricatures of Darth Vader and a montage showing Lisa with double fat hair like Princess Leia. The Springfield Waxworks' Chamber of Horrors contains Mr. T, Ronald Reagan, and Dr. Ruth, and Laramie's mascot, Menthol Moose is a parody of Joe Camel. Musically, Homer sadly sang a song, "Blimpy Boy", for The Seekers' "Georgy Girl". Historically, there was a parody of the Hindenburg disaster, when Duff Blimp crashed into a radio tower, where Kent Brockman quoted "Oh, humanity!" When Lisa was sworn in as Little Miss Springfield in her front yard, Marge was to her left in a pink suit in a pose similar to Jacqueline Kennedy in a famous photo of Lyndon B. Johnson being inducted in Air Force One after the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

This episode ends at number 28 in Nielsen rankings for the 12-18 week of October 1992 with a 12.0 rating, seen by approximately 11.1 million households.
