Histori

Whitestone

Dutch settlers took the name of a city of limestone used to lie on the banks of the river according to popular tradition. This tradition is supported by the will and deed of the 17th century, which can be found in the Genealogical and Biographical Notes of New York, which refers to "white stone" as a local landmark and survey reference point. Whitestone got his name because the settlers discovered that Whitestone was built on white limestone. This neighborhood is patrolled by NYPD's 109th Precinct, and is part of the Queens Community Board 7. Traditionally limited by the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge (opened 1939) to the west and Throgs Neck Bridge (opened 1961) to the east. Whitestone postcode is 11357.

The area, for the most part, belonged to Francis Lewis, a delegate to the Continental Congress and the signatories to the Declaration of Independence. The plantation was the site of British raids during the Revolutionary War. Lewis was not present but his wife was taken prisoner and his house burnt to the ground. For the time period Whitestone was called Clintonville after Dewitt Clinton, former governor of New York; This etymology is present in the name of Clintonville Street, located in the neighborhood. At the end of the nineteenth century, many wealthy New Yorkers began building luxury homes in the area, which used to be agricultural land or forests. Rapid developments in the area occurred in the 1920s, however, as the Long Island Rail Road trolley and cart trains at Whitestone Branch expanded into the neighborhood. Although this train service ended during the Great Depression, the part of the right-of-way was then used by Robert Moses to help build the Belt Parkway, which included the Whitestone Expressway that stretched along the southeast edge of the former Flushing Airport and through Whitestone. Flushing Airport has been abandoned since 1985.

Further developments came with the construction of the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge in 1939. The bridge measures 2,300 feet and is the fourth longest bridge in the world at the time of its construction.

Malba subsection

The name of the suburb of Malba in northern Whitestone comes from the first letters of the surname of the five founders of Malba Land Company: Maycock, Alling, Lewis, Bishop, and Avis. Malba is considered part of Whitestone, one of the more affluent communities in Queens. Demographically, the population is mostly white and European (Greek, Italian, Irish and Jewish), with a small minority of Asians. Most of the residential properties in Malba are big houses.

The first known inhabitants of the area known as Malba today are David Roe, who arrived from England in the 1640s. According to the book Clarence Almon Torrey, David Roe Of Flushing And Some Of His Descendants, Roe became a Flushing resident around 1666. In 1683, Roe was taxed on a 35 acre (140,000 m 2 and subsequently increased its holdings substantially, eventually gaining a plateau around what became Malba. Roe's farm is on the east side of the bay, which became known as "Roe's Cove". He was among the best Flushing residents, owned land, farm stock, carpentry equipment and two slaves.

In 1786, John Powell purchased the 87-acre (350,000 m 2 ) Roe package for 1685 pounds, 6 shillings, and 8 pence. It has been reported that Roe lost his land due to his loyalty to the crown during the American War of Independence. Powell then built a house and the bay was renamed "Powell's Cove", the name he wears today. During the 19th century, some of Powell's land fell into the hands of Harry Genet, a member of Tammany Hall, a famous political machine in New York City. Powell's house was destroyed by fire in the 1890s.

During the second half of the 19th century, Roe/Powell land was passed on to a number of owners. A map dating from 1873 lists Smiths, Biningers and Nostrands as landowners in the area. Agriculture Nostrand and Smith represent most of what Malba today. The area around Hill Court and 14th Avenue is known as "Whitestone Heights". In 1883, the rail service to Manhattan extended on "Whitestone and Westchester Railroad", then Long Island Rail Road. The Whitestone line terminus is on "Whitestone Landing" (154th Street), a popular summer resort area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

William Ziegler, a homemade industrialist and president of the Royal Baking Powder Company bought all of these packages in or about 1883 and his holdings were known as "Ziegler Tract". Ziegler died on May 24, 1905, leaving his wife Electa Matilda Ziegler (a philanthropist for the blind, among others) and his son, William, Jr., was then 14 years old.

William S. Champ (former secretary of Ziegler) and W.C. Demarest (both Mrs. Ziegler's nephews) (both became one of the first families living in Malba) established the Realty Trust to buy Ziegler channels from his plantation for development purposes. Champ is vice president of the Realty Trust, and also one of Ziegler's planters. The Ziegler Tract has been valued for $ 100,000 shortly after Ziegler's death. In the spring of 1906, the Realty Trust secured over 100 investors from New Haven, Guilford, Bridgeport, and other Connecticut cities to the Ziegler Tract purchase plan. Based on a preliminary map of the area, developers, at one point, planned a heavily populated community; with the house in much no more than 20 feet (6.1 m) wide. Of course, this plan has been modified and many larger properties are developed. The trust is represented to investors that property can be purchased from Ziegler plantations for $ 640,000. In fact, 163 acres (0.66 km 2 ) that eventually became Malba, had been purchased earlier from Ziegler plantations for $ 350,000. Subsequently, Connecticut residents such as Samuel R. Avis, Noble P. Bishop, George W. Lewis, David R. Alling and George Maycock were elected as guardians (all five names combined to form the MALBA name) of the Tanah Malba Company.. The true, smaller, amount paid to the Ziegler estate was not revealed until 1912. (For a full discussion of the acquisition of the Realty Trust on land and his subsequent defense against the lawsuit from the Malba Land Company see Crowe v. Malba Land Co., 135 NYS 454 , 76 Others 676 (Sup.Ct. Queens Co. 1912)).

Development slowly began in 1908. A train station in the Whitestone line was added where 11th Avenue sits today. The Champs and Demarests were among the first families of Malba to have a home in Malba. There were thirteen houses during World War I and over one hundred built in the 1920s. The railway station was closed in 1932. The triangle by Malba Drive and 11th Avenue was dedicated as "Jane Champ Park" on 16 November 1969 and was renovated by Malba Field and Marine Club in 2005.
