A futon ( ?? ) is the traditional Japanese style of the bed.

A complete set of futons consists of a mattress ( ???? , shikibuton , lit. "spread futon" ) and blankets ( ???? , kakebuton , lit. "cover the futon" ) . Both elements of the futon bed set are flexible enough to be aired, folded and stored in a large (oshiire) cabinet during the day allowing the room to serve purposes other than as a bedroom. Traditionally, futon is used on tatami, a kind of floor mat that also provides a softer base for the futon than the hardest type of flooring, such as wood or stone. Futon should be folded daily and aired in the sun regularly to prevent mold developing and also to keep mattresses free from dust mites (dani). Throughout Japan, futons are usually seen hanging on balconies that are screened in the sun. Futon dryers are also available for those who can not hang their futon.

Futon Western style, which usually resembles a low wooden sofa bed, differs substantially from their Japanese counterparts. They often have western mattress dimensions, and are too thick to fold up 180 Â °. They are often arranged and stored on a flattened frame, which avoids having to move them into the air, especially in the dry indoor air of centrally heated homes (Japanese houses are not heated traditionally).
