History
First use of frequency in Glens Falls
1410 AM aired as WSET in 1959, programmed the middle format; for a while, the station studio is located at the Queensbury Hotel in Glens Falls. In 1965, WSET changed its summons to WBZA; a new nickname emerged from the station owner's tribute to WBZ in Boston. WSET and WBZA are broadcast in 1410 AM with a "noon" license from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). At sunset every day, the station will leave the air until the next day at 6 am. In 1971, the format changed to the Top 40. During the 1970s, the WBZA evolved into more than contemporary adult formats, and eventually changed the frequency to 1230, by the end of 1982; the station is now WMML, a sibling station to WENU.
Current station
From 1982 to 1988, the frequency of 1410 previously occupied by WBZA was on air, until it returned as WSTL country music station in 1988. The station picked up the WBZA summons in early January 1998, and changed again in September 2000 to WENU today..
In the meantime, WENU is a simulcast broadcast from FM station, now WNYQ, with Adult Standard format. When FM turns to AC, WENU stays with Adult Standard. Recently, WENU has switched to Classic State format.
On January 30, 2012, WENU, together with WMML's sister station, signed the broadcast, when an antenna in Queensbury, New York was demolished to allow the new antenna to be installed. WENU returns to the air with a new nickname, "The U" on March 15, 2012 and a greater focus on community news coverage. The new WENU signal allows people to the north of Warren County and south of Saratoga County to hear the station.
The WENU Classical Country Format ends on February 22, 2013 while CBS Sports Radio comes on February 23, 2013.
