The Scotties Tournament of Hearts ( French: Le Tournoi des Coeurs Scotties , commonly referred to as the Scotties ) is the annual Canadian women's curling championship, approved by Curling Canada, formerly called the Canadian Curling Association. The winner went on to represent Canada in the women's curling world championship. Since 1985, the winner will also return to next year's tournament as "Team Canada". Officially known as the "Canadian Women's Curling Championship".

Since 1982, the tournament has been sponsored by Kruger Products, formerly known as Scott Paper Limited when it was a subsidiary of Scott Paper Company in Canada. Thus, this tournament was formerly known as Scott Tournament of Hearts ; when Kimberly-Clark joins Scott, the Canadian arm is sold to Kruger Inc. based in Quebec - while Kruger was granted a license to use several Scott brands in Canada until June 2007, he was granted a long-term license to the brand Scotties because Kimberly-Clark already has Kleenex. Thus, the tournament was officially renamed the Scotties Heart Tournament in 2007.

Until 2018, the format is round robin from 12 teams. Starting with 2015 Scotties Heart Tournament, there are more than twelve eligible teams; therefore a pre-qualifying tournament is held to trim the pitch to twelve. In 2018, a new 16-team format was introduced, in which all 14 Canadian Curling associates included teams in the main draw, in addition to the defending champions, and the winner of a play-in game between the two highest ranked teams. on the Canadian Ranking Team Ranking table that does not win their provincial championship.

At the end of the round-robin, a playoff takes place to determine the championship winner. The system used is known as the Page playoff system.

History

Pre-history

1913 marks an important point in women's waving when both Manitoba Bonspiel and the Ontario Curling Association begin holding women's curly events. Other provinces would later add to the provincial women's championship, but it was not until the 1950s that higher levels of women began to emerge. At the moment there is a Western Canada Women's Championship (sponsored by Company T. Eaton) but no tournaments for the eastern provinces. In 1959, Eaton drew up their sponsorship, giving the organizers of the Western championship an initiative to have a national championship.

In 1960, the Canadian Women Curling Association was created with Dominion Stores Ltd. who are looking for national championship sponsors. That year, the eastern championship took place so the winner could play the winner of the western championship. In this event, Ruth Smith and his team from Lacolle, Quebec face Joyce McKee from Saskatchewan (comprising Sylvia Fedoruk, Donna Belding, and Muriel Coben) with McKee victory. The match between the two teams is played in Oshawa, Ontario.

The following year the tournament was held in the same format as Brier and held in Ottawa. McKee wins again, with new front ends Barbara MacNevin and Rosa McFee.

Initial history

In 1967, Dominion Stores was unable to reach a compromise with the tournament organizers, and their sponsorship fell. The Canadian Women's Curling Association runs its own tournaments without a major sponsor.

Sylvia Fedoruk, after taking over the presidency of the Canadian Curling Women's Association, found a major sponsor at Macdonald Tobacco Company, the same sponsor as Brier. Their sponsorship began in 1972 with a tournament called the "Macdonald Lassie" championship, after the company's trademark.

In 1979, under increasing pressure from the Canadian Government's anti-tobacco policy, Macdonald Tobacco Company withdrew their sponsorship from Brier and the Women's Championships. The Canadian Women's Curling Association runs the tournament without major sponsorship for the next few years. 1979 also marks the first year of the Women's Curling World Championships, where the national champions will play. Also, the 1979 event was the first tournament to feature a playoff. Prior to that, the championship team was the one with the best round robin record.

Heart Tournament

Robin Wilson, a member of the 1979 championship team, and former employee of Scott Paper led the effort to get the company to sponsor the championship. It worked, and in 1982 Scott's first Heart Tournament was held.

The Scott Tournament of Hearts will last 25 years, and see the likes of many great teams. The first Heart tournament was won by Colleen Jones and his team Nova Scotia. It took 17 years to win the other, but he will end with four championships for a total of six championships. By 2018, Colleen Jones's achievements of six championships are equaled by Jennifer Jones of Manitoba. Other great curlers at Hearts are Chris More and Connie Laliberte from Manitoba, Heather Houston, Marilyn Bodogh and Rachel Homan from Ontario, Vera Pezer and Sandra Schmirler from Saskatchewan, Cathy Borst, Shannon Kleibrink and Valerie Sweeting of Alberta and Lindsay Sparkes and Kelly Scott from British Columbia.

The new sponsorship makes this tournament popular when it starts airing on television. Today, TSN covers the entire tournament. The CBC has covered the semi-finals and finals until the 2007-08 season. In 2013, Sportsnet and City began offering coverage of provincial playdown finals in Manitoba, Ontario, and Alberta as well.
