Newtown High School is a high school in Elmhurst, an neighborhood in the Queens district of New York City. The body of multinational students consists of about 2,879 students, with a large percentage of Hispanic and Asian students. Newtown High School celebrates its 120th anniversary in 2017. In 2010, Newtown High School held graduation at York College, for the first time in over 30 years, rather than other locations such as St. University. John and the Forest Park.
The school offers courses, advanced placement classes in English and Literature, Biology, Spanish Language and Literature, Chinese, Calculus BC, and Human Geography, among others; business/technology programs; pre-engineering/tech preparation; and art programs.
Newtown High School has teams in various sports, both put together and sorted by gender. Sports offered include wrestling, football, baseball, cross country, outdoor tracks, softball, bowling, handball, volleyball, basketball, tennis, and others. Gymnastics never played a role, but has been stopped.
Newtown has newspapers, Key Clubs, student organizations, language clubs, poetry clubs, debating teams, mediation, robot clubs, photography clubs, several cultural clubs, among others. Newtown also has a famous guitar class, which has performed for QPTV (Queens Public Television).

Newtown High School is a large high school in the Elmhurst residential neighborhood, in western Queens. It is one of the most prominent buildings in the Queen, and is a testament to New York City's commitment to public education. Bounded by 48th and 50th Avenues, and 90th and 91st Streets, this school occupies the entire city block. The current building is the result of several building campaigns spanning nearly four decades, three architects, and several architectural styles.
According to the Land Conservation Commission website the school has been in existence since 1866, when a small wooden school was built to serve Newtown children and the surrounding farms. Due to the long history of the site, and the architectural significance of the building, New York City appointed Newtown High School as a landmark in 2003.
The oldest part still in school is from 1921, designed by C.B.J. Snyder in the Flemish Renaissance Revival style. Snyder's choice of this style shows his consciousness about New York and especially Elmhurst, who were early as Dutch colonies. This is one of only a few public schools in New York City that are executed in this style.
Snyder's design was built in addition to the Boring and Tilton schools that had been demolished in 1900. The design continued the jump from the original building, and was complemented by a dramatic 169-foot tower placed above it by a dome and a turret. The tower is visible throughout the neighborhood and gives the school a slogan: "We're Tower Above the Rest." Additional Snyder consists of two wings, has granite mimic the terra cotta base, and is wrapped with buff and beige brick, limestone, terra cotta, and decorative ceramic tiles, twisting cornices, multi-soldier flat arch lintels, and sculptural reliefs on doors enter porticoes.
Immediately after 1930, another addition was built to accommodate a rapidly growing student population. Architects Walter C. Martin, designing two additional three-story wings, which have the same style but are less ornate than the previous Snyder wing. Martin's wing is wrapped with buff and cream bricks and lime detail; one feature gables stepped with ceramic tile design.
The latest addition was completed in 1958 and designed by Maurice E. Salo and Associates. This wing replaces the original school building by Boring and Tilton which has been deemed by the Education Board to be less and irreparable with renovation. Instead of echoing additional ancient motifs, an extra square-shaped rectangle is designed in International Style. The steel frame structure is lined with cream-colored brick, lime trim and aluminum panel.
In 2012, the New York Landmarks Conservancy honors a comprehensive exterior restoration with the prestigious Lucy Moses Award to a team led by SUPERSTRUCTURES Engineers Architect.
