Peran dalam Odyssey
In the Six Books of Odyssey, Odysseus is stranded on the coast of the island of Scheria (Phaeacia in several translations). NausicaÃÆ'ä and his ladies went to the beach to wash clothes. Woken up by their play, Odysseus emerges from the forest completely naked, scaring the maids away, and begging Nausica for help. NausicaÃÆ'ä gave Odysseus some laundry to wear, and took him to the suburbs. Realizing that rumors might show up if Odysseus was seen with him, he and the maids went to town. But first he advised Odysseus to go directly to Alcinous's home and file his case with Nausica's mother, Arete. Arete is known to be more wise than Alcinous, and Alcinous believes in his judgment. Odysseus followed this advice, approached Arete and won his approval, and was accepted as a guest by Alcinous.
During his stay, Odysseus recounts his adventures to Alcinous and his palace. This recount forms most of the Odyssey . Alcinous then generously provided Odysseus with the ships that eventually took him home to Ithaca.
NausicaÃÆ'ä is young and very pretty; Odysseus says that he resembles a goddess, especially Artemis. NausicaÃÆ'ä is known to have several brothers. According to Aristotle and Dictys of Crete, NausicaÃÆ'ä later married Telemachus, son of Odysseus, and had a son named Ptoliporthus.
Homer gives a literary account of love that is never revealed (perhaps one of the earliest examples of unrequited love in literature). While she is presented as a potential love interest for Odysseus - she tells her friend that she wants her husband to become like him, and her father tells Odysseus that she will let him marry her - no romantic relationship going on between couples. NausicaÃÆ'ä is also the mother figure of Odysseus; he ensures Odysseus returns home, and thus says, "Do not forget me, for I am giving you life," indicating his status as a "new mother" in the rebirth of Odysseus. Odysseus never told Penelope about her encounter with NausicaÃÆ'ä, of all the women she met at her long journey home. Some suggest this shows a deeper level of feeling for the young woman.
