Design and history
The earliest known houndstooth appearance is Gerum Cloak, a garment found in Swedish peat swamp, dated between 360 and 100 BC. Contemporary houndstooth checks may come from woven wool fabrics from the Scottish Lowlands, but are now used in many other materials. Traditional houndstooth examination is made with alternating ropes of four dark threads and four bright threads in both warp and weft/filling in 2: 2 simple braid, two above/two below the warp, forwarding one thread each pass. In early reference to houndstooth, De Pinna, a New York City upper class men's and women's apparel was founded in 1885, including a houndstooth examination along with a Scotch club check and a Scotch plaque as part of a 1933 spring clothing collection. The oversize houndstooth pattern is also used prominently in the Alexander McQueen Fall 2009 Collection, titled Horn of Plenty . The patterns are a reference to a typical Christian Dior tweed suit.
