History
Establishments and early years
The company started in 1939 as a Quality Court, a chain of referrals consisting of seven motel owners in the South. It publishes the names of all properties according to their standards and directs guests to member properties. In 1941, the group was included as Quality Courts United. Then, the motel chain is operated under the name Quality Motels (1963-1971) and Quality Inns International (since 1972). Quality Courts United accepts hotel franchises without the norms or stringent guidelines of the company. This is in contrast to the Holiday Inn which from the outset implements many mandatory standards and guidelines (eg, room size and facilities) at each location. Also, Quality Inn accepts franchises with existing hotels.
During the early years, the operation of the Court of Appeal was fully within the United States east of the Mississippi River and parts of Canada. From 1946 to 1964, Quality had a marketing partnership with Best Western, whose properties were located west of the Mississippi River, and thus did not compete directly with Quality. It was abandoned in 1964 when Best Western expanded into the eastern US with its Best Eastern operation (which was replaced by a national Best Western operation in 1967). The Mutu Court started its efforts towards national coverage in 1966 when it opened a motel in St. Louis. Louis, Missouri and two in Texas in Houston and Arlington.
Growth and expansion
The company became Quality International as the company switched to the franchise in 1972. A few years later, with a franchise well on the way, about 300 hotels are independently owned and only about 38 still belong to the company.
In 1982, Quality Inns started segmenting by introducing Comfort Inns and Quality Royale. Comfort Inn competes with chains like AmericInn Hotels, Baymont Inn & amp; Suites, and Fairfield Inn by Marriott; Quality Royale is meant to compete with the upper middle price chains like Red Lion Hotels and Four Points by Sheraton. Quality Royale was converted to Clarion Hotels in 1987. The hotel represents an array of well-equipped hotels offering a variety of hotel styles and locations, from the city center to the airport and resort. Clarion provides a variety of services, including a full-service restaurant, lounge, room service, and a banquet and conference center. The Clarion boutique line, Clarion Collection (now Ascend Collection), is an extension of the brand. The Ascend Collection is designed for upscale boutiques and historic hotels with established local identity.
Two all-suite divisions, Comfort Suites and Quality Suites, were introduced as the first mid-range, all-suite market chain. The original Quality Inn brand competes with Holiday Inn, Best Western, and Ramada. Many former Holiday Inns were re-conceived as Quality Inns during the 1990s and 2000s. In contrast, Quality eliminates more than half its original location.
In 1989, the company introduced McSleep, an economic brand utilizing a consistent corridor interior design prototype and an all-new construction, designed by Rob Spurr. The name was immediately converted into Sleep Inn after litigation from McDonald's. Sleep Inn and Suites is low to medium price. Since then, 320 locations have been opened. All offer a deluxe "Morning Medley" deluxe breakfast, a swimming pool in most locations, free local calls, and a consistent exterior/interior design. The brand received its first major facelift in history with "Brand Refresh", a modernization of all properties in 2012 with newly-inspired guest rooms and public spaces.
In 1990, Quality International changed its name to Choice Hotels International. The company purchased three oriented economic chains, Friendship Inns, Rodeway Inn, and Econo Lodge during the early 1990s. Friendship Inns, founded in 1961 in Salt Lake City, Utah, were later absorbed into the Rodeway and Econo Lodge chain.
In 1997, the company introduced the extended-stay Mainstay Suites brand and Privilese Guest Guest Privileges program, whose name was later changed to Privileged Privileges. Mainstay Suites is branded a long-term stay hotel, inherited by Choice Hotels International.
