A bedside , sometimes called the foundation , is part of the bed that supports the mattress. The bed base itself is held in place and framed by the bed (bed frame). In the United States, spring bed case bases are very common (to the point where 'bed base' and 'box spring' can be used synonymously). In Europe, spring springs are more common.

There are three main types:

• The traditional box spring consists of a rigid frame containing an extra-heavy task spring. The foundation is often paired with innerspring mattresses, as this extends the life of the spring unit in the core of the mattress.
